Satin ou Satin de Soie : lequel est plus bénéfique pour les cheveux ?

Satin or Silk Satin: which is more beneficial for the hair?

We see everywhere on social networks many hair accessories in satin or silk satin which are very beneficial for taking care of the hair, especially with textured hair: curly, curly and frizzy.

80% of people believe that the benefits of a satin hair accessory are the same as silk satin. We are sorry to tell you, but only the word "satin" is the common point between these two. To understand this, we will see their difference together.

Satin

Contrary to what is often thought, Satin is a weaving technique that has been used for two millennia. It is one of the three main weaves used in weaving along with Linen (or Taffeta) and Twill (or Twill). Compared to these three weaves, satin has the least crossing of threads (or fibers) and this is what gives it this smoother and shiny effect on the upper side and a matte side on the lower side.

If you have ever visited a fabric market, you know that there are different types of satin: silk satin, polyester satin, cotton satin, linen satin, wool satin, or blended satin. The realization of a satin weave can be done with several materials (or fibers): silk, cotton, polyester, nylon, etc... In 2000 or 3000 BC in China, the Satin fabric could only be made from silk, which is why people tend to confuse it today.

The intensity of the softness of the fabric then depends on the material used. This shine and fluidity reflects chic and elegance, which is why Satin is very popular.

This smooth surface is very advantageous for hair use, because it does not retain the hair and thus limits the formation of frizz and knots.

Silk Satin

Silk Satin is SILK WOVEN IN SATIN. The material used for weaving is therefore silk.

Silk is a natural protein fiber, a filamentous substance produced by a butterfly or spider. Silk fabrics are derived from the cocoon produced by the caterpillar. The protein composition of this fiber gives it a hydrophobic characteristic. What is hydrophobic? “ Hydro ” = water and “ phobia ”. In chemistry and physics, a substance is said to be hydrophobic when it has little affinity with water or is repelled by water. (eg oil).

Thus, it is this hydrophobic characteristic of silk with the weaving technique that provides more benefits to the hair.
Silk does not absorb the water contained in the cells of the hair fiber and the skin unlike the polyester material. So it preserves the hydration of the hair.
This is why the use of a hair accessory: Scrunchie / scrunchie, pillowcase, silk satin cap is very advantageous for textured hair which requires more hydration than other types.
